Dragons undone by turnovers, Red Devils in 34-26 defeat

Friday night, the Clinton Dragons posted some impressive offensive numbers, but turned the ball over five times, as they fell to 0-3 on the season with a 34-26 loss at Halls.

Expecting the Red Devils to run the football as is their MO, the Dragons were caught flat-footed when, on the first play of the game, Tae Rucker hauled in a halfback option pass from Brett McMahan and scored from 79 yards out. The score remained 7-0 until Jake Parris scored the first of his four touchdowns of the night on a 42 yard pass from quarterback Ty Humphrey.

Clinton struck back early in the second quarter on a 6-yard Eli Deshomme run over the right side, but on the ensuing kickoff, saw Parris take it another 79 yards for a score that gave Halls a 21-6 lead. Clinton answered back three minutes later when Jacob Brock plunged in from one yard out to draw back to within 21-13. Halls scored with 4.9 seconds left in the half on a 7-yard pass from Humphrey to Parris to take a 28-13 lead into halftime.

Clinton struck first in the third quarter, with Blake Cooper busting loose for a 25-yard touchdown that made the score 28-20. Parris capped off his big offensive night with a 50-yard touchdown run with just over a minute to play in the third quarter.

Clinton closed the gap to 34-26 with 1:29 to go in the game on a Cooper eight-yard run, but were unable to recover an onside kick.

Cooper led Clinton with 138 yards on 16 carries, and the two touchdowns. Deshomme gained another 89 yards on the ground on 14 carries, and a score, while Conner Moody piled up 80 yards on nine carries. Evan Winchester made two athletic, circus catches over smaller defenders on his way to five receptions for 91 yards.

Clinton was intercepted three times, and lost two fumbles, while Halls turned the ball over only one time in the game.

Clinton outgained Halls 450-390, including boasting a 324-136 advantage on the ground, but the Red Devils outpaced the Dragons through the air, 254-126.
