Oak Ridge school news

The Oak Ridge School Board recently extended the contract of School Superintendent Bruce Borchers by an additional year. Borchers’ contract extension will keep him in Oak Ridge through June 17th, 2023.

The Oak Ridge school system has named its teachers of the year at its nine schools.

The teachers of the year are:

  • Preschool—Melissa McMurry
  • Glenwood Elementary School—Amanda Fitch
  • Linden Elementary School—Steffanie Smith Greer
  • Willow Brook Elementary School—Melanie Bloomer
  • Woodland Elementary School—Inger Scudder
  • Jefferson Middle School—Michael Murphy
  • Robertsville Middle School—Michael Mott
  • Oak Ridge High School—Kayla Gass
  • Secret City Academy—Tobran Tillman

The school winners were nominated by their principals and peers for this 2018-2019 application.

Each district in the state may submit one nominee for the state award. The state announcements will be made Friday.

The Tennessee Teacher of the Year program is designed to promote recognition, respect, and appreciation for outstanding teachers in Tennessee, to stimulate interest in teaching as a career, and to encourage public involvement in education, the press release said.

Each year, the Tennessee Department of Education applauds teachers who care about children, who devote their professional lives to enriching the lives of Tennessee students, and who demonstrate exceptional gains in student achievement.

Oak Ridge Schools on Wednesday announced its district teacher of the year: Melanie Bloomer of Willow Brook Elementary School.

The Tennessee teacher of the year represents Tennessee in the national teacher of the year selection process, which is sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers.
