Dragons grounded, season ends at Soddy-Daisy

Soddy-Daisy 42 Clinton 19…The Dragons ground-and-pound offensive was effectively ground to a halt and the homestanding Trojans advanced in the 5A playoffs.

Clinton’s bruising rushing attack, which had over 470 yards rushing a week ago and averaged almost 10 yards per carry, was held in check, was limited to 150 yards and just three yards per carry by a fast, aggressive Trojan defense. Soddy-Daisy (6-4) gave the Dragons a taste of their own medicine, running the ball on 35 of 38 plays, and churning out 266 yards on the ground.

The Trojans “big-played” the Orange and Black as they built and extended their first quarter lead. Garrett Richardson ran the ball three times, scoring a 54-yard touchdown on his first carry and a 46-yard touchdown on his second carry of the night. He also caught a 59-yard touchdown pass from Spencer Gore–his only catch of the night. The Trojans also got an 89-yard kickoff return from Kesean Eubanks and two rushing touchdowns from Hayden Maynor.

Clinton was led by Josh Breeden, who rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown. Brantley Nichols caught a scoring strike from Luke Harrison and Cody Parker closed out the scoring late in the third quarter with an 84-yard kickoff return touchdown of his own.

Clinton ended its season with a 4-7 record, and a solid foundation for 2019.
