Boys’ hoops teams punch tickets for state tourney

The boys’ field has been set for next week’s state basketball tournament in Murfreesboro following Monday night’s substate games, which saw five of the six Region 2 teams who played punch their tickets to MTSU.

In Class AAA, Region 2 runners-up Powell sprang the upset in Johnson City, knocking off Science Hill 58-48. In Knoxville, Region 2 champ Bearden made short work of Dobyns-Bennett, crusiing to a 70-44 victory.

In Class AA, Region 2 champion Fulton throttled Unicoi County 90-57 and Alcoa won at Region 1 champ Grainger 72-64.

In Class A, Region 2 champions Oakdale waylaid Sullivan North 77-53, but Region 2 runner-up Coalfield fell on the road at North Greene 79-75, in a game with some questionable officiating at the end.

The boys’ draw to determine who plays whom and when will be held later this week. The girls’ Division I tournaments begin tomorrow in Murfreesboro.
