Accident pins one on Dutch Valley Road

A Rocky Top man was trapped in his car following an early Thursday morning traffic accident on Dutch Valley Road.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 22-year-old John Phillips was driving a 1999 Saturn SL1 west on Dutch Valley at around 6:25 Thursday morning when he tried to pass a slower-moving car and lost control of the car. The Saturn left the roadway and rolled over several times, struck a mailbox and the ditchline before coming to rest in a field.

Phillips was pinned in the car and had to be extricated by crews from the Medford Volunteer Fire Department. He was transported to an area hospital but the report does not indicate which one or mention the severity of his injuries.

His front-seat passenger, 21-year-old Jennifer Phillips was also hurt in the crash, but again the extent of her injuries was not reported. A 2-year-old child in the backseat was not injured in the violent crash. Both adults were wearing seatbelts and the child was properly restrained in a safety seat.

John Phillips was cited for failing to exercise due care and for violating the state’s financial responsibility laws. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
