State hoops: Grace, Harriman advance; 4 ET teams in today’s semis

Thursday was a successful day for the two East Tennessee boys’ high school basketball teams at the Class A state tournament in Murfreesboro.

First, Grace Christian upset number-one ranked Humboldt 62-59 to advance to a state semifinal this evening, and then just a couple of hours later, fellow District 3A member Harriman unseated three-time defending state champion Memphis Mitchell 59-54.

The semifinals in class AAA match up Independence and Southwind followed by the eagerly-anticipated matchup of #2 Oak Ridge and #1 Memphis East.

In Class AA, Catholic was set to face Whites Creek this afternoon with Haywood and Maplewood locking horns in the second semifinal.

The Class A semifinals feature Grace Christian taking on Clay County while Harriman battles the Columbia Academy. If both Grace and Harriman advance, their fifth meeting of the season would be played on Saturday with a state championship on the line.

The championship games will be televised on MyVLT and you can follow the games as they happen with up-to-the-minute stats, play-by-play and more at www.tssaa.org.
