Elderly cyclist killed in OR wreck

An elderly Oak Ridge man was killed in a Sunday afternoon traffic accident in west Oak Ridge.

The crash involving a bicycle and a small SUV occurred shortly before 2 pm Sunday on Blair Road just east of the East Tennessee Technology Park.

The accident killed the cyclist, identified only as an 85-year Oak Ridge man. Oak Ridge police say that at the request of the man’s family, his name is not being released at this time. The driver of the SUV, 74-year-old Wanda Lowery of Kingston, was uninjured in the crash, which remains under investigation. There has been no word yet on any possible charges in the crash.

In addition to Oak Ridge Police and Fire crews, units from the Anderson County EMS, Roane County Sheriff’s Office and the Oak Ridge Public Works Department responded to the crash scene. According to Oak Ridge Police, some DOE employees who were nearby when the accident happened helped provide immediate medical assistance to the cyclist before paramedics arrived. The Clinton Police Department also responded, assisting their Oak Ridge counterparts with accident reconstruction.
