D3AAA Consolation Monday in the books

Monday was Consolation Night at the District 3AAA basketball tournament at Clinton High School.

In the girls’ consolation game, the Anderson County Lady Mavs edged Campbell County 51-50 in overtime to take third in the District. The Lady Cougars forced overtime with a furious fourth-quarter rally to erase a double-digit deficit and had the momentum headed into the extra period. Sophomore Brooklin McCoy’s three-pointer with 3.6 seconds to play in overtime proved to be the difference and she finished with a game-high 21 points. In the first quarter, McCoy passed the 1000-point mark for her career. Madison Brady paced Campbell County with 20 points.

Anderson County will travel to William Blount on Friday for the first round of the Region 2AAA tournament while Campbell County travels to District 4 champion Maryville.

The boys’ consolation game was a shootout, with Karns outlasting Clinton 106-96. KJ Hawkins paced a balanced Beaver attack with 23 points and Karns (21-6) also got 21 points from Isaiah Keeter and 18 points apiece from Taylor Everett and Tee Hodge-Harper. Clinton’s offense also displayed some firepower as Daraon Jones connected on six three-pointers on his way to a game-high 29 points and Evan Winchester also knocked down six triples as part of his 20 points. Travon Hill added 18 for the Dragons (12-17).

Clinton will play at the winner of the Bearden/Maryville championship in District 4 on Saturday night while Karns will travel to the loser of that game.

Tuesday is Championship Night at the D3AAA tournament at Clinton.

In the girls’ title tilt, it’s third-seeded Powell against top-seeded Oak Ridge. The winner of the D3AAA championship will host Bearden—the fourth-place team out of D4AAA—while the loser will entertain Hardin Valley on Friday.
