(Tennessee Smokies) The Biscuits scored four runs in the fourth inning and would never look back in their fourth straight win over the Smokies.
RHP Brad Markey (L, 5.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, HR) would be sent by Tennessee to duel against RHP Chris Kirsch (W, 7.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO) in the fourth game of the five game series. With the loss, the Smokies move to 18-25 in the second half and 46-67 overall, while the win for the Biscuits moves them to 25-19 post All-Star game and 59-55 on the season.
The Biscuits would have a monstrous four-run fourth inning. 3B Patrick Leonard (2-4, 2 R, 2 2B) would lead off with a double past first base and RF Justin Williams (2-4, R, HR, 2 RBI) would follow with a two-run home run and put Montgomery on the board with a 2-0 lead. 2B Kean Wong (2-3, RBI, BB) would then single in the frame followed by a double from C Jake DePew (1-4, R, 2B, SO) and Wong would be thrown out at home trying to score. After a single from CF Braxton Lee (1-5, R, SO), DH Granden Goetzman (0-5, SO) would reach on what would be ruled as an error, but would score DePew. SS Willy Adames (2-4, RBI, BB, SO) followed with the inning’s final punch on a single to score Lee and make it 4-0 in favor of the Biscuits.
In the sixth inning, RHP Starling Peralta (2.0 IP, 2 BB) would enter for the Smokies and pitch well for two innings. LHP Jack Leathersich (1.0 IP, 3 H, R, ER, 2 SO) would take over for Tennessee in the eighth. Leonard would double to right field to start the frame followed by a single from Williams. After a strikeout, Wong would single to center to score Leonard and give the Biscuits a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, 3B Gioskar Amaya (1-4, R, 2 SO) would single to start the inning, SS Carlos Penalver (3-4, R, SO) and CF Trey Martin (1-2, RBI, 2 BB) would follow with the same to score Amaya to cut the Biscuits’ lead to 5-1. 2B Ian Happ (0-3, RBI, SO) would then hit a sac fly to score Penalver and make it a 5-2 game. RHP Kyle Winkler (SV, 1.2 IP, 2 H, R, ER, 2 SO, HR) would then enter for the Biscuits in an attempt to get out of a jam and on the first pitch Martin would steal second base.
RHP R.J. Alvarez (1.0 IP) would enter in the ninth and wouldn’t allow a Biscuits’ base runner to give the Smokies one more chance.
The Smokies would draw within two runs after 1B Ben Carhart (1-4, R, HR, RBI) led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo shot to left, his second of the year, and made the score 5-3. RF Lane Adams (1-3, 2B, BB, 2 SO) would double following the long ball and it looked as though the Smokies would threaten Montgomery’s lead, but the next three batters would be sent down to preserve the Biscuits win.
