Charges pending in Wednesday crash

A Speedwell man is facing charges after a two-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon in Campbell County.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol says that 43-year-old Doug Mayes of Speedwell had been eastbound on Highway 63—General Carl Stiner Highway—shortly after 3 pm Wednesday when his Jeep Liberty crossed the center line and collided with a Hyundai Elantra driven by 77-year-old James Wise of Cleveland, Tennessee.

Both drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles and were flown to UT Medical Center by medical helicopter, as was the passenger in Wise’s car, his 77-year-old wife Ressie Wise. She has been treated and released from the hospital while both her husband and Mayes continue to recover at UTMC.

Troopers reported that Mayes will face charges of failing to exercise due care, violating the financial responsibility law and for driving on a license that had been revoked due to a previous DUI.
