Local Sports Update May 25th

The high school spring sports championships—aka the Spring Fling—got underway Tuesday in Murfreesboro.

In AAA baseball, the Sevier County Smoky Bears coached by former Clinton head coach Casey Taylor, got a no-hitter from pitcher Devante Matthews as they downed Collierville 3-0. Sevier County faces Summitt in a winners’ bracket game Wednesday afternoon. The other AAA East Tennessee squad to make the trip to Murfreesboro, Farragut, fell to Arlington 5-2 and will play an elimination game Wednesday morning.

In Class AA, CAK beat Chester County 5-2 and will face defending champs CPA this afternoon in a winners’ bracket contest.

In Class A, Grace Christian held off Goodpasture 5-4 and will play Jackson Christian Wednesday in the winners’ bracket.

In AAA softball, Gibbs begins its tournament with a game this morning against Arlington. Dickson County handed Seymour a 2-0 defeat to send the Lady Eagles to the losers’ bracket, where they will meet Brighton this morning.

In AA softball, Union County lost to Waverly 2-0 and will try to stay alive this afternoon in an elimination game versus Dyersburg. CAK pummeled the Livingston Academy and plays a winners’ bracket game today against White House Heritage.

In Class A, Midway was sent to the losers’ bracket with a 4-1 loss to Marion County. Midway tries to keep its season going today against Forrest.

On the soccer pitch in Class AAA, Bearden blanked Collierville 3-0 and will face Station Camp in one semifinal tonight. In Class A/AA, CAK beat Notre Dame 3-2 and Greeneville beat White House, setting up an East Tennessee semifinal showdown Wednesday night.
