Local Sports Update May 23rd

Over the weekend, several area teams punched their tickets to this week’s state tournaments in Murfreesboro.

In Class AAA baseball, Farragut easily advanced on Friday, clobbering Morristown East 13-0, and on Saturday former Clinton head coach Casey Taylor led the Sevier County Smoky Bears to their first state tournament appearance with a 10-3 win over Powell.

In Class AA, CAK crushed Chuckey Doak 10-0 and Greeneville shut out Catholic 6-0.

In Class A, Grace Christian is headed back to state after beating Unaka 7-1. Meigs County downed South Greene 2-0 to advance to state.

On the softball diamond in Class AAA Seymour blanked Hardin Valley 4-0 and Gibbs beat Daniel Boone 6-5.

In Class AA, CAK beat Unicoi County 13-3 and Union County advanced to the state tourney with a 9-2 win at Elizabethton.

In Class A, Midway advanced with a 10-0 win over the University School and Meigs County advanced with a 9-1 win over South Greene.

On the soccer pitch, Dobyns-Bennett ended Oak Ridge’s season with a 3-1 win Saturday in a AAA sectional, while Bearden advanced with a 2-0 win over Sevier County.

In Class A/AA, Greeneville blanked Catholic 3-0 and CAK routed Sullivan South 8-1.

In Southern League baseball, the Smokies beat Biloxi 10-9 on Saturday but dropped two games on Sunday, 5-0 and 6-5. Their series concludes Monday night at Smokies Stadium.
