Local Sports Update 5/27

Thursday, the Spring Fling continued in Murfreesboro as state high school baseball, softball and soccer tournament action hit the final stages of crowning champs.

In Class AAA baseball, the title will be decided tonight when Siegel faces Arlington. In Class AA, Spring Hill will face CPA and in Class A, Grace Christian from Knoxville, 8-6 winners Thursday over Jackson Christian, will play either Jackson Christian or Scotts Hill for the championship tonight.

On the softball diamond, Gibbs won twice on Thursday to avoid elimination and played again this morning against Siegel for the right to face Dickson County later today for the title. In Class AA, CAK blanked Waverly 5-0 and awaits the winner or Waverly and White House Heritage in the title game this afternoon. In Class A, Meigs County will take on either Silverdale or Marion County for the state title.

On the soccer pitch, Webb won its second straight championship, beating ECS 2-0 in overtime. In Class AAA, Bearden faces Ravenwood for the crown tonight, while CAK takes on CPA in the A./AA championship game.

The Tennessee Smokies beat Chattanooga Thursday night 7-6. Their series continues through Sunday in Chattanooga.

Tune in this weekend for a doubleheader of NASCAR Racing from the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Saturday at 2 pm on WYSH and WQLA, we will bring you the Xfinity Series Hi Sense 300 and Sunday at 5 pm on WYSH, WQLA and Merle FM bring you all the action of the Sprint Cup Series Coca-Cola 600.

Finally today, Clinton High School athletic director and assistant principal Dan Jenkins has been named principal at Norwood Middle School. Jenkins will be replaced as AD and assistant principal by Dragon baseball coach Brad Collette. With his promotion, Collette will have to step down as the coach of the Diamond Dragons, which means one of his first duties will likely be to hire his replacement. Congratulations to both men.
