Local Sports Update April 19th

This is your Local Sports Update for Tuesday.

We will start our look at the scoreboards with high school baseball action from Monday.

The Clinton Dragons sent their seniors out in style, snapping an 11-game losing streak with a 10-1 win over visiting Campbell County. Senior pitcher Peyton Vandegriff scattered five hits and struck out seven in the complete game and fellow senior, catcher Brady Harber, collected 3 of the Dragons’ 12 hits on the night. The Cougars will look to snap their own ten-game losing streak when the same two teams square off this evening at Campbell County.

In other District 3-AAA action, Halls jumped out to a big early lead at Anderson County but the Mavericks rallied for a 10-9 win, while Karns got past Oak Ridge 3-1 and Central took care of Powell 3-2.

In other area action, Wartburg slipped by Oliver Springs 7-6; Union County shut down Gatlinburg-Pittman 7-0; Greenback belted Midway 12-2; Rockwood beat Tellico Plains 10-4; Kingston blanked Webb 2-0 and Oneida hammered Sunbright 13-1.

On the softball diamond Monday, Catholic took two from Rockwood, winning 7-4 and 9-6; while Oliver Springs pasted Wartburg 14-3 and Powell upended central 8-3.

On the soccer pitch, Kingston routed Harriman 6-1.

The Tennessee Smokies blanked Montgomery Monday at Smokies Stadium winning 4-0. The series continues through Thursday. Find a complete summary and get a look at the Smokies’ first Southern league Player of the Week award winner for the 2016 season at www.wyshradio.com.

In the NBA Tuesday (tonight), the Memphis Grizzlies look to even their series with the Spurs in game two at San Antonio. The Spurs won by 32 on Sunday and lead the series 1-0. Tonight’s game 2 will be played at 9:30 and shown on TNT.

In the NHL, the Nashville Predators lead their first round series with Anaheim 2-0 after a weekend sweep on the road and will look to increase that series lead when game three is played tonight at 9:30 on the USA Network.
