CCSO investigates attempted murder-suicide

Deputies with the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office say that a shooting reported to them late Wednesday night in the Cherry Brook subdivision was an attempted murder-suicide. Deputies were called to a home on Beach Lane at around 11 pm Wednesday on a report of a double shooting and say that the investigation determined that a man identified as Virgil Andrews had shot his longtime, live-in girlfriend Susan Smith and then turned the gun on himself. Andrews died at the scene while Smith was taken by ambulance to UT Medical Center. A Lifestar medical helicopter was unable to respond due to weather conditions.
