Region tourney round-up; semifinals Mon & Tue

High school basketball Region tournament play began on Friday with the ladies taking center court.

In Region 2AAA, Bearden’s girls blasted the Anderson County Lady Mavs out of the postseason 81-37 while District 3 champs Oak Ridge beat Heritage 58-32 behind 21 points from Mykia Dowdell. Elsewhere in Region 2AAA, Hardin Valley nipped Campbell County 44-41 and William Blount pummeled Powell 85-52.

Monday’s Region 2AAA semifinals will be played at Bearden with the William Blount facing Oak Ridge at 6 pm, followed by Bearden and Hardin Valley at 7:30 pm.

In Region 2AA, it was Alcoa beating Pigeon Forge 68-49, Fulton whipped CAK 56-45, Gatlinburg-Pittman took the sting out of Kingston 71-49 and Union County blew out Scott County 68-37.

The Region 2AA semifinals will be played tonight (Monday 2/29) at Alcoa, with Fulton facing Union County at 6 pm, followed by Alcoa and CAK in the nightcap.

In Region 2A on Friday, the Harriman girls defeated Coalfield 64-50, Midway trounced Oakdale 57-43, Grace Christian handled Oneida 59-47 and Meigs County knocked out Wartburg 63-41.

The Region 2A girls’ semis will be played Monday at Harriman with Midway and Meigs County squaring off at 6 pm and Grace to battle Harriman at 7:30 pm

On the boys’ side Saturday, in Region 2AAA, Oak Ridge survived some “stall ball” by Farragut that limited the Wildcats explosive offense, but Oak Ridge was able to win 39-30. Powell knocked out Bearden 64-59, Central downed Heritage 45-36 and Karns completed the District 3 sweep with a 60-54 win over Maryville.

Tuesday at Oak Ridge, the Region semis will be played with Karns facing Central at 6 pm and Oak Ridge tangling with Powell at 7:30.

In Region 2AA action Saturday, it was CAK pounding Gatlinburg-Pittman 71-46, Fulton eliminated Kingston 65-32, Alcoa squeaked past Union County 71-68 and Catholic blitzed Austin-East 61-37.

The Region 2AA semis will be played Tuesday at Alcoa with Fulton facing Catholic at 6 pm and CAK battling Alcoa at 7:30.

In Region 2A Saturday, it was Grace Christian holding off Coalfield 78-72, Meigs County outscoring Jellico 90-80, Oakdale handling Rockwood 54-37 and Harriman edging Wartburg 76-71.

The Region 2A semifinals will be played at Wartburg on Tuesday with Harriman and Meigs County taking the court at 6 pm followed by Grace Christian and Oakdale.

The semifinal games are single-elimination affairs while the two region finalists will be guaranteed at least two more games—the region championship and a sub-state game.
