Thursday night the Clinton Lady Dragons picked up their first win of the season in emphatic fashion, routing winless Central 56-36 at the Don Lockard Gymnasium. The Lady Dragons improved to 1-10 and 1-4 in District play with the win, which started with Clinton jumping out to a 22-0 lead after the first quarter. The loss was Central’s 37th in a row, a streak that dates back to February of 2014, when they beat Clinton. Kelley Wandell led the Lady Dragons with 15 points and 16 rebounds while Katie Starnes chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds and Nikki Jones provided a spark off the bench with seven points and four rebounds.
In the nightcap, the Bobcat boys drilled eight three-pointers in the first half and built a large halftime lead over the sluggish Dragons, whose three-game winning streak was snapped with a 66-36 loss at home. The loss drops Clinton to 7-4, 2-3 in D3AAA. Tyler Thackerson led the Dragons with 12 points and, as a team, played much better in the second half, but by then, it was too late.
Elsewhere, Anderson County’s girls went to Halls and knocked off the Lady Red Devils 64-57 but Halls tripped up the Mavericks in the nightcap, 51-36.
Lenoir City’s girls hammered Kingston 49-26 while the Kingston boys slipped past the Panthers 57-55. In District 3-AAA action, it was Gibbs’ girls taking down Karns 48-43 and the Karns boys downing Gibbs 68-54.
