Borchers speaks to national STEM group

(Submitted) On October 13, Oak Ridge Schools Superintendent Dr. Bruce Borchers served as a distinguished guest speaker at the second annual Discovery Education STEM Leadership Symposium, which focused on advancing student achievement in STEM.
Held at 3M’s World Headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota during the finals of the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, this event explored best practices for building school-wide cultures of STEM and discussed innovative STEM curricula that deepens student engagement and improves achievement. Dr. Borchers presented to 30 fellow educators from across the country during a panel discussion highlighting national success stories in STEM education.
Among the other guest speakers at the event were:
Dr. Hakeem M. Oluseyi, astrophysicist and star of Science Channel’s Outrageous Acts of Science
Dr. Delony Langer-Anderson, Senior Product Development Specialist, 3M Consumer Health Care Division and 3M Scientist and Young Scientist Challenge Mentor
Sahil Doshi, winner of the 2014 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge
Attendees represented 22 school districts across 16 states.
In August of 2015, Discovery Education launched three new services to help school systems nationwide grow capacity for STEM teaching and learning — STEM Foundations, which empowers school systems to build a unique STEM capacity building initiative; STEMformation, a comprehensive, three year-system for building a culture of STEM at individual school sites; and STEM Leader Corps, a four-year system for scaling STEM education district wide.  Produced and delivered by Discovery Education’s team of nationally recognized STEM and professional development experts, each of these new services support school systems through a unique combination of immersive professional development initiatives, job-embedded instructional coaching, rich digital content, and extensive community engagement.
“I appreciated the opportunity to share Oak Ridge Schools’ success story at Discovery Education’s recent STEM Leadership Symposium and connect with other school leaders from around the country working to improve STEM teaching and learning,” said Dr. Borchers.  “Hearing the innovative approaches my colleagues are taking to transform STEM education and experiencing new ways to engage students in this critical discipline has provided me new ideas for strengthening the culture of STEM in my own school district.”
